The Honest Overview

The smart home market is full of competing brands and platforms, each with genuine strengths and real limitations. The 'best' system depends on your home, your budget, your technical comfort level, and what you want it to do. Here's our honest assessment of the main options.

Consumer Platforms

Apple Home (HomeKit)

One of the core platforms used in our Coventry demonstration home. Apple Home places a strong emphasis on privacy, with many functions processed locally rather than in the cloud. The app is clean and easy to use. Voice control through Siri works well. The main limitation is that not every device supports Apple Home — but the range has grown significantly. Best for: Apple households, privacy-conscious homeowners and those who prefer a clean, simple control experience.

Amazon Alexa

Alexa supports a very broad range of smart-home devices and services and is particularly useful where voice control is a priority. The app experience differs from Apple Home, but its broad compatibility makes it useful across mixed-device environments. Best for: voice control and mixed-device environments. We typically run Alexa alongside Apple Home for maximum flexibility.

Google Home

Google Home offers broad compatibility, integrated voice control and strong alignment with Android and Google services. Best for: Android households. We can integrate Google Home where it is the preferred platform.

Philips Hue

Philips Hue is a well-established smart-lighting ecosystem with broad platform support, strong colour performance and a wide product range. Best for: retrofit smart lighting, colour scenes and flexible room-by-room control.

Professional Platforms

Loxone

A hardware-based platform used in residential and commercial automation projects across Europe. Its wired architecture supports a strong reputation for reliability. Requires professional installation and programming. Best for: new builds, large properties, properties requiring extensive whole-home integration.

Control4

A professional whole-home automation platform with integrated touch panels, dealer-supported system architecture and broad integration capability. Requires a certified dealer for installation and changes. Positioned at the higher end of the professional market. Best for: high-specification residential installations where interface quality matters alongside system functionality. Sornione works with a range of platforms selected to match each project's requirements.

Lutron

Lutron is a well-established professional lighting and shading platform with a strong reputation for reliability, control quality and long-term maintainability. Best for: high-specification residential lighting and shading installations.

Savant

A high-specification residential automation platform known for a polished user interface and strong Apple ecosystem integration. Available through authorised dealer networks. Best for: high-specification installations where interface aesthetics and Apple ecosystem alignment matter.

Which Should You Choose?

Our honest answer: it depends on your property, your budget and your priorities. The right system for a 2-bedroom flat is different from the right system for a 6-bedroom new build.

At Sornione, we select platforms based on the property, integration requirements and budget. Our Coventry demonstration home uses Philips Hue, Apple Home, Amazon Alexa, Yale, Shelly and Ubiquiti UniFi, giving us a live environment in which to test how these systems interact in everyday use.

The best way to understand your options is a design consultation. We assess each property and recommend the platform that fits the requirements and budget — not the most expensive option.
