The Honest Answer
Professional smart-home projects vary considerably in cost. Focused installations may begin in the low thousands, while large fully integrated properties can reach tens of thousands of pounds or more, depending on scope, device count and integration complexity. The range is wide because every home is different — the number of rooms, the devices chosen, the complexity of integration and whether new wiring is required all affect the price significantly.
At Sornione, scope and price are agreed in a fixed written quotation before work begins, so there is no day-rate creep.
Illustrative Project Scopes
Focused Integration — typically from £5,000
Example scope for a smaller property or selected rooms. Final specification, price and device count depend on the property survey:
- Smart lighting across agreed rooms and zones
- Smart thermostat and basic climate control
- Smart door lock and video doorbell
- Voice control integration
- Professional networking setup
- Single-app control
Whole-Home Integration — from £15,000
Designed for 3–5 bedroom homes seeking wider whole-home integration. Final specification and price depend on device count and property:
- Everything in Focused Integration
- Full CCTV system (4–6 cameras)
- Motorised blinds and curtains throughout
- Gate and garage automation
- Multi-room audio (3+ zones)
- Professional-grade networking
- Energy monitoring
Bespoke Integration — from £30,000
For larger properties, new builds and projects requiring extensive whole-home integration:
- Everything in Whole-Home Integration
- Home cinema design and build
- Smart bathroom and kitchen
- Garden and irrigation automation
- EV charging integration
- Solar monitoring and optimisation
What Affects the Price?
Property Size
More rooms means more devices, more cabling and more installation time. A 2-bedroom flat will cost significantly less than a 6-bedroom detached home for the same scope of work.
New Build vs Retrofit
Installing the same scope during construction can often reduce installation complexity and labour, because cabling and controls can be planned before finishes are completed. Cables can be run before plasterwork, and switches can be positioned correctly from the start.
Wiring Requirements
Some systems require new wiring — particularly hardwired smart switches. If your home needs electrical work, this adds to the cost. All such requirements are identified during our design consultation and included in your written quote.
Device Choice
Professional platforms such as Lutron and Loxone generally cost more than consumer-grade alternatives because of differences in system architecture, integration options, installation model and long-term maintainability. We advise honestly on which level of product is right for your needs and budget.
Is It Worth It?
The value of a smart home is personal — but there are some concrete benefits worth considering:
- Energy management — smart controls can help reduce unnecessary heating and lighting use. Actual impact depends on the property, existing systems and how the home is used.
- Security — visible cameras, smart locks and integrated alarm systems give greater visibility and control over property security
- Quality of life — the practical convenience of a well-integrated home is one of the most consistently cited benefits.
