The Fundamental Difference

Installing smart home technology in a new build and retrofitting an existing property are two very different challenges. Understanding the difference helps you plan correctly and avoid the most common (and expensive) mistakes.

New Build Installations

The Advantages

A new build gives you a blank canvas. Cables can be run inside walls and floors before plasterwork. Smart switches can be positioned exactly where you want them. The result is a completely invisible installation — no surface-mounted cables, no visible conduit, no compromise.

  • Wiring run inside walls during construction — invisible and permanent
  • Potentially lower installation labour where cabling and controls can be planned during construction
  • More system options available including hardwired platforms
  • Cleaner, more professional finish
  • Designed to evolve, built in from the start

When to Engage Us

As early as possible — ideally before first fix. We work directly with your builder or electrician to spec out cable routes and switch positions before walls are closed. Early involvement can reduce installation complexity, avoid rework and improve coordination with other trades.

Retrofit Installations

The Reality

Retrofit is common in residential automation, and with the right approach the results can be excellent. The key is choosing systems designed for retrofit that minimise disruption while maximising capability.

  • Wireless-first systems like Philips Hue and Shelly require minimal wiring work
  • Smart thermostats replace existing thermostats directly — no new wiring
  • Smart locks fit most existing door hardware
  • Motorised blinds can be fitted to most window types

Where Retrofit Gets Complex

If you want hardwired smart switches, which can provide a cleaner integrated finish, some rewiring may be required. Solid walls, older wiring and difficult cable routes can add cost. We assess the property before finalising the quotation so these factors can be identified in advance.

Our Honest Recommendation

If you're building a new home or undertaking a major renovation: involve us now, before walls are closed. Early involvement can reduce overall project cost and complexity.

If you're retrofitting: don't worry. A well-designed retrofit can deliver a highly integrated experience without the disruption of a full new-build installation.

Our Coventry demonstration home is itself a retrofit and shows how lighting, access, networking, motorised blinds, climate and automation can be integrated successfully into an existing property. Either way, start with a design consultation. We'll explain what is practical for the property, the likely scope and the costs involved.
